Research Project

Collective Improvisation and Innovation in Fields. A New Perspective on Labour Market Integration of Refugees.

In my PhD project I am investigating how the regulation of labour market integration of refugees in the state of Berlin has changed since 2015 until today. The public often proclaims an innovative paradigm shift - away from restrictive and towards open access to the labour market. Using qualitative methods, I analyze which topics in the field of labour market integration are particularly fought over by which actors and where regulations are finally (re-)constituted. For me, not only state actors from politics and administration play an important role, but also migrant organizations, various initiatives and projects - ultimately actors who participate in the development of the field of labour market integration of refugees in Berlin.

I am interested in how this development is concretely shaped in cooperation and struggle between heterogeneous actors. In the interplay between empiricism and theory, I try to develop a concept of collective improvisation in organizational fields that will serve as an analytical aid for moments of social upheaval and crisis. In this context, I also investigate the recursive interplay of collective improvisation with (social) innovations in fields.
