Research project:

Innovation as a cipher for the modern subject

The innovation imperative in vocational orientation

The term ‚innovation‘ for the production of novelty is traditionally situated in the fields of technology, economy and science. Though in the present modern society innovation can be seen as a phenomenon  which shapes all social spheres. Innovations are aimed – everything and everybody has to be and wants to be innovative. On the basis of new knowledge innovations become reflexive; they are demanded and promoted as solutions for diverse technical and social problems. In this sense innovations, being innovative and doing innovation become a norm and do have an impact as a social imperative on the subject and its every day life.

From a governmentality perspective governmental practices in vocational orientation aim at promoting the subject of innovation. My thesis is: that in this heterogenous and contested field the innovation imperative has specific subjectifying effects on self-images and life-concepts.

To this end the genealogy of the vocational orientation will be reconstructed, particularly the emergence of the innovation imperative; and concrete governmental practices will be analysed.
